The greatest gift of this journey so far has been time together—precious, uninterrupted time as a family. Back home, this time of year would look vastly different. Kent would be traveling for work, I’d be juggling multiple events, and Everly would get the best of us in between these moments. Now, we’re in each other’s company every day, creating memories together, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
But there’s another side to this: decision fatigue.
Even with thoughtful planning, much of this adventure feels like we’re following the wind. Unlike a vacation packed with activities over 10 to 14 days, we have the luxury of stretching out our time. We breathe, we space things out—but that same spaciousness leaves room for questions to creep in:
- Are we doing enough?
- Are we capturing meaningful content for Frenchitivity?
- Are we creating Frenchitivity into the brand we envision?
- Are we adding value?
- Are we fully in the moment?
- Will we have a rental car at the next destination?
- What’s for dinner?
The questions tumble through my mind endlessly, more insistent than I ever anticipated. At home, life moved so fast that there was no room to even acknowledge these thoughts. It was just go, go, go. Here, the sheer pace of thinking—and noticing my thinking—has been fascinating.
Oddly, recognizing how much mental space decision-making takes has been empowering. Awareness is the first step toward creating space between decisions. And, my meditation practice is taking on a new depth.
Yet, I haven’t quite hit my stride. There’s no perfect rhythm yet to balance travel planning, resting, working, homeschooling, and adventuring. Everything happens at once, culminating into a cycle that feels both exhilarating and exhausting.
My hope for the next 30 days is to find ease—a rhythm that brings more clarity and reduces decision fatigue. Back home, there was a kind of convenience in the regularities of life. But reflecting now, I see that I wasn’t “thinking” less—I was just constantly doing.
My work ahead:
- Create more space between moments.
- Reduce decision fatigue.
These will be my guiding tasks for the weeks to come, and I’ll be checking in with myself and sharing updates with you as this journey unfolds.
Of course, I’ll also be creating travel blogs and guides to all the places we visit. If you’ve missed it, check out our YouTube vlog for some great recaps—don’t worry, written versions are coming soon!
Facing decision fatigue, here’s what we’re trying:
- Routing and accommodations: Finding the right balance between planning ahead and staying flexible.
- Planes, trains, and automobiles: Renting, rideshares, and taxis—a constant juggle.
- Grocery stores and new kitchens: Navigating unfamiliar places to cook up some comfort.
- Languages: The challenge and joy of communicating in new ways.
- Family dynamics: Adjusting to and enjoying 24/7 togetherness.
- Balancing downtime with adventure: Knowing when to explore and when to rest.
Stay tuned, fellow wanderlusts, as we uncover more about ourselves, our rhythms, and the world around us. The next 30 days await, and I can’t wait to share what we find.
